As an international Middle
Eastern dancer, teacher, and choreographer , Nadia has performed
throughout the U.S and world-wide, including Moscow, St.
Petersburg, Belarus and the Caribbean. Born in the
U.S. of Lebanese/French heritage, she fuses the best of
the East and the West to create dance for the 21st century
that is inspired by tradition, but not limited by it. Nadia
is known for her chameleon-like ability to bring out the
true essence of many different dance styles. She and her
company refuse to be pigeonholed as demonstrated by their
eclectic and ever-evolving repertory, which includes traditional,
contemporary and experimental dance of the Middle East and
beyond. Whether in an
intimate cabaret setting, or on a large concert stage, Nadia
brings a passion, intensity and rare musicality to every
performance.
Featured frequently in the media,
including Bravo and MTV, Nadia has also appeared in several
films and in numerous magazine and newspaper articles.
She stars in the highly praised instructional Belly
dance video, BlissDance: The Ecstatic Bellydance Workout".
Nadia and company have graced the stages of many top venues
including Lincoln Center, the Public Theatre, Madison Square
Garden, and Joyce Theater Soho, and have performed with
many highly respected musicians including Simon Shaheen
and Rachid Halihal. They have performed for numerous top
celebrities!
Nadia teaches on faculty at Lotus Music and Dance Studios in NYC. In addition to graduate level courses at Sarah Lawrence College, she has also taught master classes and workshops at NYU, Fordham University, Barnard College, and the Omega Institute. Nadia has an MFA in dance from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Although firmly rooted in Danse
Orientale, her extensive study of Ballet and Modern Dance,
as well as Indian, African, Jazz and Flamenco dance, reflects
her commitment to continue to evolve as an artist. Part
of this evolution leads her to continue to develop her singing
abilities, contributing lead vocals to Richard Khuzami's
Fused CD, as well as singing and dancing in the the off-broadway
musical, "Jehan's GoddessDance". Nadia also co-wrote
and sings on the song "Breathe", featured on her
"BlissDance" video and CD.
It was an honor for her to study
with many of NYC's master Middle Eastern Dance teachers.
Early inluences include top NYC teachers Serena,Yousry Sharif,
Gamila el Masri, Shamira Shahinian, Samara, Shoshanna, and
Jehan Kamal. Nadia also had the privilege to perform in
the companies of Serena, Gamila el Masri, Jehan Kamal and
Shoshanna. Currently, she continues her studies in NYC with
Anahid Sofian and Dalia Carella, delving more deeply into
Turkish and Global Fusion styles. Nadia also studies and
performs Folkloric and Semi-classical Indian Dance with
Shems Khan. She currently performs with the Dalia Carella
Dance Collective.
Since Egyptian Oriental Dance is
one of her first loves, she has continued to hone her craft
with private instruction from Egyptian dance legends Mahmoud
Reda and Raquia Hassan, as well as intensive workshops with
Faten Salama, Shareen El Safy, Diana Tarkan, Karim Nagi,
and many others. Turkish Oriental and Rromany dance influences
include intensive training with dance luminaries Artemis
Mourat, Tayyar Akdeniz and Eva Cernik. Nadia studied North
African Dance with the phenomenal Amel Tafsout and dances
of the Gulf region with the highly-respected Kay Hardy Campbell.
